With the continuous growth of the Internet and all the demands of an increasingly Internet-based society, it’s no surprise that tech companies are already working on the next generation. Let’s find out what the 5G Network really means and how long will it take for Canadians to start benefitting from it.
While we are enjoying the advantages of 4G technology, some companies are already looking ahead and preparing the next step. According to different sources, we could have 5G technology and infrastructures in the beginning of the next decade.
What’s the difference between 4G and 5G?
As 4G technologies are becoming increasingly stable, tech giants are working on the development of next generation internet technology, or 5G. Current 4G LTE technologies are able to deliver download speeds of up to 150mbps, while the coming generation is expected to vastly increase those numbers: some predictions say it could be up to 200 times faster than the currently available network, with speeds that could theoretically reach the 30gbps mark.
When will 5G come to Canada?
One of the tech giants involved in the development of 5G, Cisco, has predicted that 5th generation internet technology could be available to the general public between 2020 and 2021. In one of their forecasts, the company expects that, four years from now, the Internet traffic will be seven times greater, so the investment in infrastructures able to provide faster speeds will be extremely important, in order to satisfy this growing demand.
Canadian telecoms are at the forefront of the 5G infrastructure development. Telus has partnered up with Huawei to conduct tests with next generation antennas and the results have been encouraging: although some “dilution” of the maximum speed occurs when the signal is spread to different receivers, the experiment was able to replicate speeds of several Gigabytes per second. Bell has also partnered up with Nokia in similar tests, where it was possible to generate speeds up to six times faster than current LTE connection speeds.
What are the main advantages of 5G technology?
5G networks involve a great deal of investment in infrastructure development and it’s still too early to know how this will translate in terms of additional consumer costs as a way for carriers to ensure return on those investments. However, the benefits these new connection speeds will bring for customers and companies are undeniable:
- Faster internet for private and business use;
- Faster and more reliable connections for the Internet of Things and Machine to Machine (M2M) applications, such as self-driving cars and virtual and augmented reality;
- Technological advances in diverse areas, such as transportation, logistics, manufacturing and agriculture;
